High Shoals, NC Now and Then

The River Shoals

Once the hub of recreation, this was the gathering place of the community. The park was located on the south side of the river. Sunday gatherings were popular in the early 1900s (this recreation area was in D.A. Tompkin's plan for the mill village). There were tables, the band stand and a flowing spring for fresh drinking water. I speculate that the early 1900s pictures were from D.A. Tompkin's collection. David Foster told me that in the mid 1900s that you could see 20 to 30 boys skinny dipping below the dam on any hot afternoon.
