The Berry Site: Exploring Joara

David Moore, an archaeology and anthropology professor at Warren Wilson College,discussing the Berry Site,(located in Morganton and was once home to the Native American town Joara).



The Spanish came through the area in the 1500s, 20 years before the English, the explorers built forts and claimed the land for Spain. The native Indians had different ideas, after 1 1/2 years the Indians killed most of the explorers and burnt the forts.

Annual Archaeological Field Day - Exploring Joara Foundation

Field Day is open to the public and offers free lectures and viewing of opened archaeological sites and artifacts along with Native American pottery displays and production, storytelling and children's games! The events are free with the exception of a small parking fee.
