High Shoals, NC Now and Then

Saint Johns Episcopal Church

This church was always known as "The Little Church on the Hill". It was established in the mid 1800s. The last services were held in the early 1960s. St. Lukes in Lincolnton was similar to this church, they were both in the same district. Dr. Wetmore was the Rector of both churches in the late 1800s (he was also a teacher at the Pleasant Retreat Academy in Lincolnton). Vandals burnt the church.

I REMEMBER PLAYING IN THE CHURCH AND THE HOUSE AS A CHILD. WE LIVED 2 OR 3 HOUSES DOWN FROM THE CHURCH. WE MOVED TO HIGH SHOALS IN 1951 OR 1952...I WAS FOUR OR FIVE WHEN WE MOVED TO HIGH SHOALS. WONDERFUL MEMORIES. DIANE ICARD JONES
